The beauty of the pomegranate inspired this painting. I only intended to paint the pomegranate, but after harvesting the seeds from one half in a beautiful ceramic bowl, the reflections of the knife and the wood grain on the cutting board inspired me to paint the whole still-life scene. It began as a painting from life while I was taking a break from a large commissioned piece. 

The name of the piece came after the painting was complete. Persephone was torn between two worlds; that of her mother- the Goddess of summer, and her captor turned lover, the God of the underworld. When Persephone ate 6 pomegranate seeds she created the seasons. She would stay in the underworld for 6 months out of the year when the world would have winter, and return to her mother for the other 6 months when spring and summer would bloom again. 

The piece is painted on heavy duty gallery wrapped canvas on thick (1.5”) stretcher bars. All four sides are painted with a continuation of the front image. The painting is signed on the front and dated on the back. It is wired and ready to hang.
